The End Is In Sight....

Last major job at the apartment is fitting the washing machine. Not as easy as you imagine since there is no electricity, no water and no drainage where it is due to go!

Introduce Richard, the miracle worker, and his faithful assistant - me.

Nearest electricity was this socket in the shower-room. Took it off and found we were seeing daylight - turns out at some time in the past someone drilled right through the wall to the outside, and never did anything with it nor sealed it up again. Do not begin to wonder about how dangerous this was.....

Richard therefore put a waterproof junction box on the outside, and ran one electrical circuit to the left for an outside light and a second one along the wall to the right....and back in through a newly drilled hole to where the washing machine will sit. Using his longest drill bit, he made an 18 inch deep hole through three voids and four uprights. Trouble was the diameter of the hole was not QUITE big enough to pass the three cables through - and the cost of buying a new extra-long drill bit was almost as expensive as hiring an electrician to do the job in the first place! So out came the chisel.....

We had the first cable through, and then all three. Just tie a knot in it quick, said the Expert to his Assistant, before I accidentally pull it back out again!! And voila - a new socket just where we need it for the washing machine!Next problem - water supply.

Richard broke through to the water pipe under the sink and attached the correct hose. Unfortunately, in order to reach the machine, the door of the under-sink unit has to be removed permanently. We have bought a new complete installation for the sink/cabinet but if we replace the current one - we will be left with missing areas of tile. Since we want to totally renovate the whole salle d'eau next year - it is not worth partly doing it this year. So we will have to put up with it for a while as it is......

Final problem, drainage. Just the other side of the wall, in the courtyard, we find the down pipe from the bathroom of the apartment above ours. Richard's eyes light up -I can use that!!

So off comes the fence panel again, off comes the crumbly pink paint and on goes a new junction. And in goes a very big hole through the wall again.......all 18 inches of it!

All is going well.....until we try to put the fence panel back on, which now doesn't fit! Out comes the saw and hey presto - everything is back where it should be!

Tomorrow will be the interesting day - will the actual outflow pipe from the washing machine fit through the hole Richard has made?! Keep you posted.....
